Signage for
eateries at Auckland Airport

If you’re planning international or domestic travel via Auckland, make sure you check out these two chic new eateries at Auckland Airport.

Both of these projects, Glamp Grounds and Gipsy Moth, were a collaboration managed by Joylab, with design excellence by Studio Akin. BIG came on board to fabricate and install all signage elements.

Located airside on the upper level of Auckland International Airport, Glamp Grounds Bar & Kitchens has a luxury camping theme with a retro vibe. The concept recreates the good ol’ days of festoon lights, caravans and the casual Kiwi lifestyle.

All of our production was created in-house with the help of our external fabrication arm, Rodier. In colouring the background of each signage element of Glamp Grounds in racy red, we used 22 litres of 2-pot automotive paint — the equivalent of painting seven VW Beetles.

One of the greatest challenges with working on-site at the Airport is meeting security requirements. Although our highly skilled signage technicians are extremely adept at using sharp knives and tools in the proper manner, unsurprisingly, these implements are a high security risk! Some days, just getting our fully equipped team through onto the site could be a three-hour process.

With a demanding timeframe, many late nights and early mornings were spent on installation, wiring, and applying decals throughout the space.

Make sure that next time you leave our amazing country ex-Auckland, visit Glamp Grounds –Not only for its tasty Kiwiana fare but also for the famous view of Auckland International Airport runway and aircraft.

Gipsy Moth, located at the land side of Auckland’s domestic airport, features one of the largest internal neon signs Godzone has ever seen.

BIG spent time strategising how to keep within a restricted budget, with consideration of all elements and visual effects to be delivered. Our goal was to create signage solutions that were cost-effective yet visually spectacular.

Additional to the striking neon artwork, router-cut text with a satin paint finish was a clean visual feature of the branding and wayfinding system.

The positive comments we have received about the neon sign have been overwhelming!

Thanks to Joylab for bringing this team together. Fantastic design from Studio Akin, fabricated to fruition by BIG and Rodier, rounds out an excellent collaboration of industry leaders.
