Suspended signage
Xero
“Suspended” signage between two building structures
When cloud-based small business platform, Xero, approached us with a unique signage request, we jumped at the opportunity. They wanted a large construction of signage that seemed to visually “float” between two buildings.
So, the team at BIG welcomed the challenge. We immediately consulted our fabrication partner, Rodier, and bounced around ideas and logistics. Once the complex sign structure was on the drawing board, we proceeded to the next stage of preparing structural engineer reports and council permits.
Our solution was to cantilever the sign about 3.2m off the building face. The sign was installed above an atrium— a recess that was visibly hidden when entering the complex. Therefore, the robustness of the sign, and its fixings, was under much scrutiny to ensure the installation met the structural engineer’s requirements. Hey presto— we have suspended signage!
The sign installation was arranged to occur in the dead of night, due to the complexity of the structure and for minimal disruption to the public.
The disc-shaped sign is double-sided and illuminated with LEDs for night-time exposure. The surface is overlaid with a flexiface material in order to feature the digitally-printed Xero logos. Once the fittings were in place, we were able to complete the finishing touches, giving the round sign its perfectly smooth edges.
We are very proud to see the Xero brand emblazoning the buildings above St George’s Bay Road, Auckland. It’s worth a drive past—day or night—to witness the illusion of suspended signage.
